MAGAZINE COVERS
Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 10:15AM For our newest entry into our digital props series we imagine what The Mercury Men would look like on the cover of our favorite movie magazines, namely Starlog and Famous Monsters of Filmland. Unfortunately, you can't pick these up at your local newstand since they are just mock-ups that we created, but it's still a fun "what if." Do you remember when the ONLY way to get movie news or see production stills was to pick up an issue of Starlog? Way before sites like Aint it Cool News or Slashfilm, we'd tear through and obsess over every single page and picture!

Jurassic Park got me to buy all kinds of movie magazines I never would've picked up before. I remember specifically an issue of Starlog that had both a raptor and Yoshi from the Super Mario Bros. movie on it. (By the way, I am probably the only person who loved THAT movie.) The magazine was fantastic. I read and re-read it so many times, and pored over all the ads, too. Articles on Cool World, Universal Soldier, Star Trek, and the Dinosaurs for Hire comic. Geez, I miss those days. While making information so easily accesible, the Internet really ripped the magic right out of things, didn't it?

Eric, it's probably supposed to be about the production of the film before it came out. (And it's one of my favorite gags on these covers, besides the Star Trek one.)

Bobby, yea, I understand that, except in the 70's movies weren't publicized that far in advanced. It wasn't like it is today. First mention of Star Wars in Starlog was a small incomprehensible blurb in issue 6 June 1977 right before the movie was released. It wasn't until issue 7 after the movie was in theaters that there was a real article about Star Wars. I'm just giving Chris a hard time by being a nitpicker ;-)
Love the Magazibe mock-ups. I actually remember buying issue 1 of Starlog (the bulk of the issue's content was just plot synopsis' of the original Star Trek episodes.) I had just read "The Making of Star Trek" by Steven A. Whitney and back then there was a dearth of SF movie and TV. (hard to believe, I know, for those born after May of 1977.) Great job!
How about a Cinefantastique cover as well?
